Given the fact that more people than ever before are working for themselves or working in a position that makes it possible to perform their duties from home, it’s no surprise the home office is a big deal when building a custom home in Flower Mound. You may think all you need is a small space with a desk, phone, computer and storage place, but there’s a lot more to it than that if you want a space you’ll enjoy and that provides not only comfort but an environment that lends to productivity. Our North Texas custom home builders have a few ideas on designing the perfect home office we think you’ll appreciate.
Organization. Most home offices aren’t large spaces, so you’ll need to be smart when it comes to organization. Baskets or vertical file folders are good for storing documents, while you’ll need adjustable shelving for items like books, a printer or other items that take up space. It’s also a good idea to designate one drawer for those things that clutter your desk (and your mind). Built-in organizers help you keep control of pens, paper clips, post-its and other small items.
Comfort is essential. Spending hours a day in an uncomfortable chair won’t do. An ergonomic chair that provides support and comfort is worth investing in; you may also want to consider a standing desk, or one that easily converts from sitting to standing position.
Light placement enhances the home office. While you’ll want good lighting, you also want to let natural light in through windows and enjoy a view outdoors every now and then as you stretch your neck and shoulders. Keep in mind you need the right lighting if you have online office meetings. You’ll also want to arrange your monitor or laptop so sunshine or glare from windows doesn’t make it difficult to see your screen.
Location within your home. While some people are more productive with a little noise, for others it’s a distraction. Keep this in mind when deciding the location of your home office, along with whether you’ll have clients occasionally and how they’ll feel about the location. You want a productive work environment, and locating your home office in a central part of the house where there’s lots of traffic may not be the best idea.
In the end your home office should be a space that’s comfortable, thoughtfully organized, an environment you’ll enjoy working in. Give it plenty of thought before you just “pick a room” without thinking of window placement, cord storage, number of electrical outlets and other details!
