When you’re building a custom home it’s easy to figure out some of the details far in advance; how many square feet you want, layout, whether it’s a single level or multi-level home, etc. You probably know the style you want, even the color scheme and what type of lighting fixtures you’ll use. Our Flower Mound custom home builders know there are a few considerations that often go overlooked when building a home, including those we’re highlighting below.
All floors aren’t meant for all uses. Maybe you love the look of hardwood floors and plan to use them throughout your home. You may want to re-think your decision as hardwoods don’t play well in laundry rooms, bathrooms or other areas where they’re likely to get wet or be exposed to moisture frequently. You’ll also want to think about the options if you have indoor pets; vinyl, engineered hardwood and laminate are good choices for pet owners.
Have you considered whether your home will face toward the north, south, east, or west? You may be thinking “what difference does it make,” but it can make a huge difference in your enjoyment and comfort level. A home that’s facing west will get hotter during summer months in the late afternoon and evenings, not to mention the sunlight blaring through the windows. If bedrooms are on the east side of your home you may be getting up with the roosters in the morning as the sun rises. Think about these factors before you decide which direction your home will face!
Are there plenty of electrical outlets for your family’s needs? If the family or media room only has three or four outlets, chances are it won’t be enough. We live in an electronically connected world today, so be sure there are enough outlets for the television, satellite receiver, charging cell phones/tablets/iPads, lamps, and all of the other electronics or appliances you’ll be using on a regular basis.
These are things you need to give careful thought and consideration to when building a custom home, along with ceiling height and the potential for an expanding family. You don’t want to build your dream home only to have to move or build on in a few years when you add to your family or have an aging parent move in.
