Preparing For Storm Season In Flower Mound And North Texas

April 26, 2018

flower mound

It’s that time of year in Texas – storm season, which often means severe thunderstorms, hail, straight line winds and even the possibility of tornadoes, unfortunately. While storm season typically lasts through June, it’s impossible to predict how many storms we’ll see this year or how severe they will be. Our Flower Mound custom home builders have a few tips to help you and your family stay safe during the most dangerous time of the year.

First, be sure you stay informed and can receive severe weather watches and warnings. From tuning in to your local weather reports on TV to weather radios with battery back-up and charging your phone so you can receive alerts, make sure you’re in the know. Severe storms or tornadoes can pop up out of nowhere, so be ready.

Know where your “safe space” is ahead of time. When severe weather strikes, every member of your household should know the drill – where the safe space is. Whether it’s your basement, underground shelter, safe room or a room located in the middle of the house away from windows, everyone should know where to go.

Have the necessities ready in your safe space or shelter. From pillows and blankets to batteries for your weather radio and flashlights, be sure you have everything you need to keep your family as safe as possible. A first aid kit along with motorcycle or bike helmets is a good idea. Consider bottled water as well. If you have pets you’ll need a crate or pet carrier.

What if you don’t have a basement or storm shelter?

Number one – anyone who lives in a mobile home should get out and go to a safer location such as a friend or neighbor’s home or even a store or other structure located nearby.

If you live in a solidly built home, choose a location on the ground floor that has no outside walls, doors, or windows. You want the most interior room, and if possible one with heavy furniture you can get under in the event a serious storm or tornado strikes. It’s also a good idea to put on those helmets, and cover yourself with sofa cushions, a thick sleeping bag, even a mattress. You need all of the protection you can get from high winds, flying debris and possibly fallen trees, limbs, etc.

Storm season often results in property damage, loss of life, injuries and more. Stay as safe as possible and keep the tips above in mind so you can “ride out the storm” when it strikes in North Texas.
