At Bud Bartley Homes our custom green builders in Flower Mound use materials and technologies to make every home as energy efficient as possible. While we use blown-in insulation, double-pane LoE-366 windows, radiant barrier roof decking and many other components that make for a highly efficient and comfortable home while reducing the carbon footprint and saving you money, there are lots of things you can do as well to make your world even greener! We’ve included a few ideas below.
When the windows are closed, lock them. Why? Of course there’s the security factor, but locking your windows creates an even better seal to stop air from seeping in between panes.
When painting a room, be sure to choose no-VOC (volatile organic compound) paints that don’t include formaldehyde, ethylene glycol, solvents or acetone in the ingredients. This way you ensure no vapors that could pose health risks.
Tailor your landscape to the climate. When you choose grass species and plants that are native to our climate, you’ll do less (or even no) watering and likely be able to avoid chemical pesticides because these species already thrive in the area.
Clean your home with green cleaning products. You can find many of these products on store shelves, or even make your own at home using ingredients such a vinegar, baking soda, lemon juice, etc. You’ll find lots of recipes for green cleaners by simply searching online.
Clean your A/C filters regularly so your HVAC system doesn’t work as hard and does a better job at cleaning the air. It’s also a good idea to use ceiling fans so you can stay comfortable in the room you’re occupying without having to adjust the thermostat and run your A/C or heater more often than necessary.
If your appliances are old, update them with a newer model. Many appliances today use substantially less water and electricity, so you’ll conserve water and energy while reducing your utility bills.
These are just a few examples of things you can do to make your Flower Mound custom green home even greener! Better for your family, better for the planet.
