Home Builders – Fall Homeowner Tasks To Check Off Your List

August 23, 2018

We’re well into September, and fall is just around the corner. Our Flower Mound custom home builders know how quickly the time passes; before you know it, Halloween will be here followed by Thanksgiving and Christmas. Families tend to get together for meals and quality time around the holidays, and there are probably a few of those “occasional” tasks you’d like to get done before colder weather arrives. Take care of these things in the coming weeks, and you won’t be left trying to “get it all done” at the last minute.

Check the exterior paint. Do you need to touch up or even paint the entire exterior? If you see areas where the paint is peeling it could result in siding damage.

Seal out cold drafts. Inspect all exterior doors and windows to make sure there are no drafts. Use caulk or weather stripping to seal up any air leaks.

Cleaning the gutters is crucial to your home’s health. When gutters are ignored, the build up of leaves, sticks, dirt and other debris can lead to pest infestations, wood rot and other issues.

Is the roof in good shape? You can usually stand at a distance and tell if there are any missing, loose, or broken shingles. Repair or replace depending on your roof type to protect against leaks throughout the fall and winter season.

Make sure the heater is ready for the upcoming winter season. It’s still hot in north Texas and while there’s a good chance you’re using the AC as you read this, go ahead and check your HVAC system – you’ll probably want to have it inspected by a professional. Change or clean the filter, and consider having the ducts cleaned to cut down on household dust and improve air quality.

Once mowing season has come to an end, take care of all the equipment and tools you use by cleaning them, draining gas from lawn mowers, chainsaws and other gas-powered equipment, and putting shovels, trimmers and other tools in your shed or shop for protection from winter weather.

Fall is a great time of year, and by checking these tasks off your to-do list in the coming weeks you won’t have to worry about when friends and family come to visit and winter weather is here to stay!
