Recently, a study conducted by Berkshire Hathaway indicated that homeowners’ values in regards to home ownership were shifting from square footage and amenities, to confidence in the fact they made the right investment and whether a home will meet their family’s needs not only now, but in the future as well. According to Gino Blefari, HSF Affiliates CEO, prospective home buyers are expressing more permanence in homeownership, along with a wider sense of traditional value.
According to the study, millennials seek a home that is located in a lively community that offers great schools and a variety of trendy retail and dining options. Millennials also seek quick closing, secure financing, and monthly payments that are within their budgets. Millennials tend to think “in the now” when it comes to homeownership, while Gen Xers desire an investment that is smart and long-term.
The study also indicated that many current homeowners are renovating their homes using appliances, materials, and systems that are more eco-friendly, according to Blefari. Homeowners today desire to do their part to improve the environment, evident in the study which indicated 88% of those who currently own their own homes consider it important to renovate their homes in ways that include eco-friendly systems and improved energy efficiency. In fact, more than 60% are placing “green” improvements in their homes over renovations of bathrooms, kitchens, and floors.
