Energy efficiency is a hot topic today, as more and more people grow concerned about the environment and want to save money. This is especially true in building a custom home, and “green” homes today have become the rule rather than the exception – it’s not so hard to build a home that will save homeowners a bundle over the years without sacrificing beauty, amazing architectural design, etc.
Sure, it costs a little more initially to have a truly energy-efficient home built, but it’s well worth the investment considering the savings and comfort you will enjoy over the years, along with a greater resale value if you ever decide to sell. Our custom home builders work closely with you throughout the process; we want you to know, without a doubt, you are getting the highest quality home possible.
What are some of the things we do to ensure outstanding energy efficiency in our homes?
Low HERS ratings. The HERS, or Home Energy Rating System index, is the industry standard by which a home’s energy efficiency is measured, according to their website. Ultimately, the lower the HERS index rating numbers, the greater a home’s energy efficiency is. Many existing homes have a HERS rating of 130 or greater; even those homes that are Energy Star rated have an average HERS rating of 85. We strive for ratings considerably lower, typically ranging between 50 and 70.
The proper equipment for the size of your home. The same HVAC system isn’t the right fit for a home that’s 2,400 square feet and one that’s 4,200 square feet. Many homeowners don’t realize how important it is that the HVAC system is the “right size” for their homes, or how decreasing levels of humidity in summer months using “smart” programmable thermostats can drastically lower energy bills while increasing comfort.
Windows that do more than offer a great view. LoE-366 vinyl framed double pane windows not only filter as much as 98% of the sun’s UV rays, but you can also enjoy a cooler home in summer months and a warmer home in winter months. Because they filter the sun’s rays to such a great extent, these high-performance windows help avoid fading of carpet, wood floors, furniture upholstery, curtains/drapes, etc.
