Dallas & Highland Village Custom Homes – What You Need to Know

April 23, 2012

Custom home building is becoming more and more common, as families decide they don’t want to spend their lives in a home that is a mirror image of their neighbors’ homes. That’s totally understandable! You’re in the market for a custom home, one that reflects your unique design preferences and that your family will fall in love with. At Bud Bartley Homes, we offer Dallas and Highland Village custom homes that are distinctive, beautiful and upscale, but totally comfortable and livable. That being said, there are some differences between buying a “track” home and a custom home. Limit the stress and potential disappointment by keeping the following tips in mind.

Choose a reputable builder for your custom home

Perhaps the most difficult decision you will make in building a new custom home in Dallas or Highland Village is choosing the right builder. How can you choose the one that will meet your expectations and deliver your dream home?

Check the builder’s references and experience. How long has the builder been in the industry, and what is the company’s reputation? Ask for references from past clients. Look at a portfolio of the company’s work. Also ask the builder how many homes the company has built over the last year. It may seem surprising, but many custom homes never get completely finished as the builder may jump from one project to the next in order to increase profits.

Realize your input is essential

Many people looking to build a custom or semi-custom home in Dallas really don’t realize that they need to be “available.” How can your builder design the home of your dreams if you’re inaccessible and unavailable to check the progress? Your builder cannot read your mind, so it’s important that you can come by frequently and make sure that all is going as you expect. Clear communication with your builder is an absolute must!

Building a custom or semi-custom home can – and should be – fun

It can actually be exciting and fun to build your dream home – and it should be. To ensure that your experience is a good one, know upfront that building a custom home will be a bit more costly than simply buying a track home. Stay involved every step of the way, and most importantly, choose a trusted builder with a great track record!
