Dallas Green Home Builder Talks ‘Greening Up’ The Outdoors

October 13, 2013

More and more, those desiring a new home in the Dallas and Flower Mound areas are deciding to build green homes. For the most part, people are concerned about the environment for future generations, their own children and grandchildren. As a trusted Dallas green home builder, we know that not only are homeowners trending toward eco-friendly homes, they’re also taking it outdoors!

If you are wondering how you can make your outdoor environment a bit ‘greener,’ here are a few tips.

Considering a wood deck in the backyard? Think about using reclaimed or recycled wood, which can often be found at lumber yards. If they don’t have recycled wood on the property, many have suppliers who can get it. Railroad ties and wrought iron are other materials which can give a distinctive look to the outdoors.

We’ve replaced indoor lighting with more efficient bulbs, it’s time to take it outside. Most homeowners have made the switch indoors, but fail to consider outdoor lighting. Replacing old incandescent bulbs with LED lights will illuminate the outdoors, while saving you money.

Reclaimed water solutions can keep the outdoors green, while saving on energy costs. We all know the importance of saving water, but when you have a beautiful home, you want your lawn and landscaping to be just as beautiful. How can you keep your lawn gorgeous, without using sprinklers or an underground system? Collect the rain that runs off of your home or downspouts; or, talk with a landscape architect who may be able to give you more ideas regarding green solutions for irrigating your lawn.

Make a compost pile. Plants love nothing better than compost you can make in your own backyard! Throw food scraps in your compost pile, and help keep landfills clear – even better, you won’t have to spend so much money at the nursery on mulch and soil.

Conserve the earth’s resources when choosing outdoor furniture. Instead of buying new, why not buy second hand deck or patio furniture? Give it a facelift by painting or staining, and make it your own.

These are just a few ideas you can use to make your outdoor living spaces a bit greener. At Bud Bartley Family of Builders, our Dallas green home builders want to help you do your part in improving the environment. Contact us today for all of your home building needs!
