Build A Custom Home In Highland Village & Stay On Budget

August 29, 2014

While most families who are considering a custom home in Highland Village, Flower Mound, or other prestigious areas usually enjoy an above-average income, most still have limits when it comes to building a custom home. Sure, you want the finished result to be just as you have envisioned it, but it’s easy to get excited along the way and let all thoughts of cost fly right out the window.

To stay within budget when having a custom home built in the Dallas-Ft. Worth metro area, we have a few suggestions we hope will be helpful.

Have a “checks and balances” system in place. You must work closely with the architect and builder to ensure that the design, square footage, size of rooms, and other elements will “fit” within your set budget. This requires including the builder in the design process, as your builder can perform cost checks to make sure the design elements, space, etc. are not venturing outside of your budget.

Keep in mind the three types of homes. Often times a reputable home builder has homes that are move-in ready. These homes are already completed, so the price is already determined. There are also semi-custom homes, which are basically pre-determined designs but allow for the home builder to make slight alterations.

Take your time in choosing a design for your home. This will be the biggest investment you ever make, so it’s important not to get in too big of a hurry. The majority of custom home builders build homes within the same or similar styles, so even when you choose to have a custom home built the chances are high there is a home that is very similar to the one you want. Your builder can show you his portfolio or even take you to various homes he has built so that you can actually see those that are within your budget.

Don’t forget there will be other costs. Floors, cabinets, appliances, lighting, window treatments – there are dozens of costs associated with building a home outside of the actual structure itself. This is where many home buyers “blow” the budget, so keep a constant check on what you are spending.

At Bud Bartley Custom Homes, we want to make it easy for you to enjoy a quality, prestigious home in Flower Mound, Highland Village, or any other upscale area while staying within your budget. Contact us for more tips today!
